New Face for the New Year: Surgical and Non-Surgical Option

On New Year’s Eve we make resolutions. Some of us want to exercise more or eat better. Others vow to spend more time enjoying life. But many people realize their New Year’s resolutions were harder to keep than they thought.

If you only keep one New Year’s resolution for 2017, let it be this: treat yourself more. You deserve to start the new year as a new you. What better way to do that than by scheduling a facial procedure at The Centre, P.C.?

We offer a variety of facial procedures that rejuvenate your look and can make you feel youthful. Since there are so many options, let’s look at our most popular surgical and non-surgical procedures you can choose from.

Surgical Procedures

Surgical procedures are a little more invasive than non-surgical options. They take longer to heal and may require more time off work. Below are some of the most common surgical facial procedures we offer.

Rhinoplasty

This procedure reshapes the nose. It can make your nose larger or smaller, thinner or wider. It can also reconstruct the tip, bridge, or overall angle of your nose.

Who is a good candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can be performed for women 15 and older and men 17 and older. You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:

  • You feel your nose is too large or too small
  • Your nose is asymmetrical
  • You have a bump on the bridge of your nose
  • The tip of your nose is saggy, too large, or too pointy
  • Your nostrils are flared
  • Your nose inhibits your ability to breathe
  • You have a birth defect or had your nose injured in an accident

What can I expect from Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure and will be an open or closed rhinoplasty. In an open rhinoplasty, a horizontal incision is made in the columella, the vertical piece of skin that separates your nostrils. In a closed rhinoplasty, a vertical incision is used.

After surgery, you’ll move to a recovery room for a few hours before going home. You may need 7 to 10 days off from work to recover. After 4-6 weeks, most of the swelling will go down and you should be enjoying your new nose.

Risks and side effects of rhinoplasty may include recurring nosebleeds, temporary or permanent numbness, difficulty breathing, scarring, and pain.

 Facelift

Facelifts work by tightening the skin and removing fatty deposits around your face. They are intended to reduce the havoc that aging, stress, heredity, sun, and gravity can wreak over time.

Who is a good candidate for a facelift?

Since facelifts change the effects of aging, most patients are at least 30 years old or older. You may be a good candidate for a facelift if:

  • You want to feel and look more youthful
  • You have sagging skin on your face, neck, or jaw
  • You have deep creases or lines around your mouth, chin, forehead, or eyes
  • You don’t feel like you look like yourself anymore

What can I expect from a facelift?

Facelifts can be outpatient or inpatient. Your skin will be lifted and separated from the muscle tissue and then tightened and reshaped according to your specifications.

After surgery, you may have drainage tubes, wraps, or compression garments to help you heal. You may want to take a week off work to rest. After 6 weeks, much of the swelling will be gone, but it can take as long as 6 months for your facelift to heal completely.

Risks and side effects of facelifts may include: hematoma or seroma (blood build-up), infection, altered sensation, scarring, bruising, pain, and asymmetry.

Eyelid Surgery

Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can make old, tired eyes look new again. It works by removing excess fat and tightening skin around the eyes.

Who is a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is primarily used to change the effects of aging, so most patients are 35 and older. Blepharoplasty can be performed on younger patients if needed, assuming they are in good health. You may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery if:

  • Your upper eyelids are puffy with fat deposits
  • Your vision is impaired by drooping skin above the eyelid
  • You have fine wrinkles caused by excess skin under the eye
  • You feel your eyes look tired and sad and you want them to be bright and young looking

What can I expect from eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is typically an outpatient procedure. Your surgeon will remove excess skin or fat as needed before pulling the skin tight and closing the wounds.

After surgery, you’ll spend a few hours in recovery before going home. Plan on taking between 7-10 days off work to heal. After about 4 weeks, the swelling will subside and you will see what your new eyes look like.

Risks and side effects of eyelid surgery may include blurry vision, watery eyes, double vision, light sensitivity, redness, numbness, infection, swelling, bruising, pain.

Brow Lift

If you have saggy or droopy skin on your forehead and eyebrow area, a brow lift may be right for you. The forehead skin is lifted which weakens the muscles that cause frown lines.

Who is a good candidate for a brow lift?

Brow lifts are often chosen by patients with excess skin. You may be a good candidate for a brow lift if:

  • Saggy eyebrows make you look tired, sad, or grumpy
  • You have deep creases, lines, or furrows on your forehead, eyebrows, or the top of your nose
  • Your upper eyelid is obstructed by excess forehead skin

What can I expect from a brow lift?

Brow lifts are typically outpatient procedures. Your surgeon will make several small incisions in your hairline. Then they’ll pull your forehead skin up to tighten it and secure it in position with sutures or stitches.

Most patients can engage in limited activity after a couple of days but should plan to take a week off work. Stitches or sutures usually come out after 10 days. Within 3-4 weeks, the swelling should be mostly gone and a normal routine can be resumed.

Risks and side effects of brow lifts may include: hematoma or seroma (blood build-up), infection, bleeding, altered sensation, scarring, bruising, nerve injury, and pain.

Non-Surgical Procedures

If you’re new to plastic surgery or are just looking to make minor changes, a non-surgical procedure may be right for you. Below are some of the most common non-surgical facial procedures we offer.

CO2 Laser Treatments

Over time, life and the elements take a toll on our skin. These factors, along with aging and heredity, can create textural and visual irregularities. CO2 lasers can be used to fix wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, pigmentation irregularities, blood vessels, spider veins, and remove unwanted tattoos.

Who is a good candidate for laser treatments?

Laser skin treatments can be performed on almost any patient who is in overall good health. You may be a good candidate for laser treatments if:

  • Your skin is leathery or sun-damaged
  • You have wrinkles around your eyes, nose, or mouth
  • You have blotchy skin, sunspots, or unwanted freckles
  • You have scars from an accident, injury, or disease
  • You have precancerous skin growths

What can I expect from laser treatments?

Laser treatments are outpatient procedures. Your surgeon will pass the laser over areas of skin that need fixing. The laser emits short pulses of high-intensity light that break down the top layers of skin allowing new, fresh skin to reach the surface.

Healing and recovery time depends on what you have treated and how extensive that treatment is. In most cases, you will experience redness and pain for a couple of days but can return to work when you are comfortable. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions based on which procedures you have done.

Risks and side effects of laser treatments may include: hematoma or seroma (blood build-up), infection, bleeding, altered sensation, scarring, redness, swelling, pain, raised scars, and unanticipated color changes.

Injectable Treatments

Like laser treatments, injectables can solve a variety of facial inconsistencies. For instance, Botox and Dysport are used to smooth wrinkles in the forehead and eyes. Soft tissue fillers, like Restylane and Juvederm, fill lines by adding volume beneath the surface of the skin.

Who is a good candidate for injectables?

Laser skin treatments can be performed on almost any patient in overall good health. You may be a good candidate for laser treatments if:

  • You have wrinkles or lines you would like smoothed out
  • You are not ready to commit to a facelift or other surgical procedure
  • The skin on your cheeks, forehead, and around your mouth isn’t as plump and youthful as it used to be.

What can I expect from injectable procedures?

Injectable treatments are outpatient procedures. Your surgeon will sterilize your face and use a cold compress to cool the skin. Then they’ll inject filler where desired.

Healing from an injectable treatment is fast. You will be advised to keep your heart rate and blood pressure normal for a day (no exercise) but can return to work as soon as you want.

Risks and side effects of injectable treatments may include bruising, swelling, pain, headache, droopy eyelids, crooked smile, excessive eye dryness or wetness.

Kybella

Kybella is a prescription medicine that treats fat calls that cause large or double chins. It destroys fat cells, rendering them unable to store fat and eliminating the large or double chin.

Who is a good candidate for Kybella?

Kybella is ideal for anyone with mild to severe submental fat in their chin. You may be a good candidate for Kybella if:

  • You feel your chin is too large or saggy
  • You have lost weight throughout your body, but not in the chin area

What can I expect from Kybella?

Kybella is an outpatient procedure. Most patients have to have between 4-6 treatment sessions for Kybella to be effective. Your surgeon will inject Kybella under the skin of your chin, using multiple injections per treatment session.

There is little to no downtime after a Kybella treatment. While you may have some redness and swelling for up to three days, you can return to work the same day.

Risks and side effects of Kybella may include trouble swallowing, weak facial muscles, crooked smile, pain, swelling, bruising, redness, and numbness or hardening around the treated area.
