Cosmetic Treatments for Spider Veins

For more than fifteen years, the pulsed dye laser has safely and effectively treated vascular lesions or spider veins. It is designed to deliver a gentle, while an intense burst of laser light to the skin.

The light is absorbed by the blood vessels specifically in the vascular region. These vessels are gently heated and coagulated. The body then reabsorbs the treated blood vessels during the natural healing process.

The laser has a unique ability to selectively target the blood vessels of a vascular lesion without adversely affecting the surrounding tissue. In fact, it’s so safe and effective that it has been successfully used for the treatment of infants as young as weeks old.

The skin is further protected during treatment for spider veins by an integrated contact cooling that provides epidermal protection and patient comfort.

Conditions treated with the laser include:

  • Facial spider veins
  • Rosacea – affecting the skin of the face around the nose and cheeks, causing a red blush or sunburned look
  • Port-wine stains/red birthmarks and strawberry hemangiomas – red lesions that grow rapidly after birth and may impair the function of another organ
  • Warts – small benign growths in the skin that usually appear on the hands, feet or genitalia
  • Scars – raised or puffy scars that are often caused by surgery, trauma, acne or burns
  • Stretch marks – frequently appearing after pregnancy over the stomach, thighs, buttocks, breasts, shoulders and lower back; stretch marks also develop after major weight loss
  • Spider veins in the leg (less than 1 millimeter) – there are multiple causes, but the precise origin is unknown, but reports have shown that pregnancy, hormonal changes, weight gain, leg injury or prolonged standing may influence the occurrence of spider veins in the legs
  • Poikiloderma – patchy discoloration of the skin
  • Telangiectasia – widely open (dilated) blood vessels in the outer layer of the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What precautions should be taken before and after spider vein treatment?

It is recommended that you avoid exposure to the sun and tanning of the areas to be treated throughout the course of treatment. Immediately following the treatment, the area may be slightly swollen and sensitive and may feel warm. Recommended post-operative care includes: avoid sun exposure or tanning, apply ice for discomfort, and apply ointment or topical antibiotic cream, if needed.

In addition, care should be taken in the first few days to avoid scrubbing or rinsing the area with abrasive skin cleansers. A small bandage or patch may be helpful in preventing abrasion of the treated area. Pressure bandages and/or compression stockings may be required post-operatively, based on guidance from your clinician.

What does laser treatment for spider veins involve?

Patients will be provided with safety eyewear to protect their eyes from the intense laser light. The clinician then uses a small handpiece to deliver the laser energy to the skin. A light spray of coolant onto the skin will be felt just before each laser pulse. The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his or her pain threshold. Topical anesthesia may also be requested based on individual preferences or tolerances.

What other methods are used to treat leg veins?

The most common therapy used to treat leg veins is sclerotherapy, which The Centre, P.C. offers. Sclerotherapy involves needle injections of sclerosing agents (such as saline) into the vessels to be removed.

Can spider veins in the face be treated?

Yes, facial spider veins also can be treated with the CoolGlide Excel laser. Your clinician can provide more details. In addition, The Centre, P.C. carries a line of camouflage makeup that you may want to consider using until the temporary effects disappear.

Are there any side effects with the laser treatment for spider veins?

Patients may experience some temporary discoloration or reddening of the skin around the treatment site. Some patients experience pigmentary changes in skin color. The skin will typically return to normal pigmentation over time.

Why should I have treatment for spider veins or a a vascular lesion?

Many people are uncomfortable with unsightly vascular lesions. With a means of treatment as safe and effective as the pulsed dye laser, there is simply no reason to live with this problem. Furthermore, young children or infants can be treated before they are subjected to the psychological as well as physical trauma that may be associated with a vascular lesion.
