Male cosmetic surgery rates are on the rise in the U.S.
According to a new report published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, men requested approximately 1.3 million cosmetic procedures in 2016, equal to eight percent of total cosmetic procedures.
These findings are not surprising. Men are increasingly interested in procedures that have long restored confidence in women but weren’t directly marketed to men.
In fact, nearly every cosmetic procedure is suitable for male patients. With the right surgeon, the ideal male physique may not be far out of reach.
Increase Demand for Male Liposuction
Among male patients, liposuction had the greatest rate increase in 2016, an increase of five percent year-over-year. The top five cosmetic procedures for men in 2016 included: nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, breast reduction surgery, liposuction, and facelift.
Minimally-invasive procedures such as BOTOX®, laser hair removal, and chemical peels were also popular among men in 2016.
What’s unique about male liposuction is that it offers a weight loss solution as well as desirable body contouring for men who are at or near their ideal body weight. Many male patients opt for the procedure to define muscles in areas where fat is less likely to shrink even with diet and exercise.
Liposuction is safe to use on a number of problem areas including the abdomen, arms, buttocks, chin, flanks, calves, hips, knees, and neck. Plus, liposuction can be safely combined with other cosmetic procedures to deliver fully customizable results based on individual patient needs.
Male Liposuction: The Basics
Fat deposits are stored differently in men compared to women. Men, for example, commonly store excess fat around the abdominal area while other areas remain relatively lean—if you’ve ever heard the phrase “Dad Bod”, you know what we’re talking about.
In some cases, men store fat in areas such as the hips, thighs, and breasts, similar to the way women’s bodies store fat. Fat deposits in these areas often produce a curvy or feminine figure that can reduce confidence or self-esteem in men.
Not surprisingly, the most common areas treated by male liposuction include the chin and neck area, abdomen, flanks, and breast area.
Liposuction, like most cosmetic surgery, is an outpatient procedure that doesn’t require overnight monitoring in a hospital. The procedure takes approximately one to two hours depending on the treatment area, and patients are typically back on their feet in a couple of days; full results can be seen in approximately six to eight weeks.
Good Candidates for Male Liposuction
Men considering liposuction should be in relatively good health, nonsmokers, and close to their ideal body weight.
During an initial consultation with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon, patients should discuss goals and expectations so the surgeon can determine how best to achieve those goals and with what combination of procedures.
