BOTOX is not just for women

BOTOX® Cosmetic has long been popular with women seeking to reduce facial wrinkles and fine lines and restore a youthful, refreshed appearance. But BOTOX is not just for women, and an increasing number of men are discovering the benefits of this quick, effective skin rejuvenation treatment.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Uses

With time, the activity of muscles in the face—particularly those in the forehead and around the eyes and mouth—contribute to the development of lines and wrinkles that can make you look older than you are or feel.

BOTOX temporarily inhibits the activity of these muscles, helping smooth common problem areas that include:

  • Glabellar lines, the so-called “frown lines” between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet, the fine lines that stem from the outer corners of the eyes
  • Forehead wrinkles and furrows
  • Lip lines that extend from the edges of the mouth
  • Slight creases, or “bunny lines,” on the sides of the nose
  • Skin banding on the neck

BOTOX may also be used in conjunction with dermal fillers to further erase lines and wrinkles, and renew skin volume and tone. The accomplished plastic surgeons at The Centre, P.C., will work closely with you to determine the best treatment options for your unique needs and cosmetic goals.

Men and BOTOX®

Nearly 400,000 men a year are revitalizing their visages with BOTOX, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

The number of men seeking BOTOX skyrocketed more than 300 percent over the span of a decade and continues to grow. The trend has become so fashionable, and received so much media attention, that BOTOX for men has earned its own nickname: “Brotox.”

Why the spike in popularity? After its approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 for the reduction of forehead lines, BOTOX was marketed heavily toward women. As an increasing number of women experienced the effectiveness of BOTOX first-hand, and as the acceptable uses for BOTOX expanded, many women encouraged the men in their lives to give it a try.

Today, the list of men who proudly admit to BOTOX treatment includes celebrities such as Simon Cowell (American Idol) and Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy).

How Does BOTOX® Work?

BOTOX is an acronym for botulinum toxin type A, which is a neurotoxin that subdues the muscle contractions that contribute to progressive lines and wrinkles by temporarily impeding the nerves responsible for muscle action.

BOTOX is injected into the underlying muscle of the desired area via a tiny needle. The procedure is so brief—typically about 10 to 15 minutes—that treatment can often be administered over a lunch break. BOTOX requires no recovery time, and while some patients experience minor, fleeting discomfort at the site of the injection, the treatment is usually painless.

The desired effects of BOTOX are generally noticeable within 3 to 10 days, and the results may last for 3 to 6 months. It is important to note that muscle activity in the affected area will gradually return, and repeat treatments are needed to maintain long-term results.
