How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is an excellent option for individuals discouraged by unwanted hair on their face, neck, underarms, legs, back, and sensitive areas like the bikini line.

Most people are familiar with the term laser hair removal; however, few understand how it actually works.

Today, we’re pulling back the curtain to reveal how the experienced technicians at the Centre Yourself Medical Rejuvenation Spa utilize state-of-the-art technologies to provide long-lasting, smooth results.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is performed by heating stem cells in the follicle, or the bulb of the hair, which is where hair growth occurs. When the follicle is disrupted, the hair falls out and results in smooth skin.

The selective absorption of photons within the laser only targets dark colors. This allows the laser to target dark hair while not damaging the skin or causing irritation. For example, dark hair (black or brown) is the easiest to remove, while white, light blonde and strawberry-blonde hair do not respond as well to laser hair treatments.

Hair grows in three cycles: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Laser hair removal is only effective during the anagen stage—the primary growth stage and when the hair is attached at the root. Because of this, multiple sessions are required to achieve the best results.

The type of laser and the technician’s skill and understanding of how to apply the correct amount of light and for the proper length of time can impact results and the patient’s experience.

Light skin and dark hair is the ideal combination for treatment; however, newer lasers have adapted to treat a variety of hair colors and textures with great success.

Laser hair removal is safe and effective for most patients. However, this treatment may not be suitable for individuals who:

  • Use a tanning bed or self-tanning lotions
  • Are prone to light-induced seizures
  • Take certain prescription medications
  • Experience adverse reactions to the wavelengths emitted by the laser

Why Choose Laser Hair Removal?

Women and men have used a variety of remedies to get rid of unwanted hair.

Electrolysis, for example, is also an effective treatment for hair removal. However, compared to laser treatments, electrolysis is slow, tedious, and often requires more sessions to achieve optimal results. Laser hair removal is up to 60 times faster than electrolysis.

Waxing and shaving are the most popular methods of hair removal. Unfortunately, the results don’t last very long, and the long-term cost of both can be significant.

Laser hair removal isn’t permanent, even after several treatments. However, only a few sessions per year are required to provide long-lasting results.

Enjoy the freedom of long-lasting, soft, touchable skin! Laser hair removal removes 100 percent of hair in a treated area. Our certified technicians recommend six treatments for initial results and only a couple session per year for annual maintenance.

Ditch the sharp razors and hot wax! Laser hair removal is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted hair from just about anywhere.
