Cellulite Treatment Options

In our industry, we hear over and over from women how much they hate cellulite.

Across the board, whether someone is in their 20s or their 70s, slim or overweight, cellulite doesn’t discriminate.

What’s worse, even though men aren’t immune to its dimpled appearance, because of the amount of fat natural to a woman’s body composition, we carry the brunt of it, with at least eight out of 10 women reporting some amount of cellulite.

If it’s so common, why do we spend so much time feeling self-conscious about it?

The fact is, anything that makes us think our bodies are less attractive, we are going to worry about it. While cellulite is not a serious medical condition, we do understand that it can be an emotional barrier for some women. Fortunately, there are a few things we can do to lessen its appearance.

Maintaining a healthy weight—along with regular exercise—is, of course, the single best course of treatment for cellulite.  Strong muscles and fewer fatty deposits beneath the skin’s surface will smooth its outer layer and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Topical skin creams containing 0.3% retinol have also been shown to reduce dimpling by increasing the skin’s elasticity and repairing damaged connective tissue that causes cellulite and the appearance of cellulite. Applied twice daily, patients generally see results over the course of several weeks.

Liposuction—the process of using a narrow tube to suction the fatty cells from beneath the skin—can be used to remove unwanted fat. The Centre, P.C. offers three liposuction methods: Ultrasonic Liposuction, Vaser© Liposelection, and SmartLipo™.

However, one of the more promising treatments of cellulite involves the use of lasers. Cellulaze™ is a treatment that attacks the structural problems beneath the skin that cause cellulite.

A minimally invasive, laser-assisted procedure performed by one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, Cellulaze is a new, FDA approved, anti-cellulite treatment that increases the skin’s natural thickness for a smoother, healthier look that lasts.

In the Cellulaze™ procedure, which is performed under a local anesthetic, the physician inserts a small tube under the skin. Laser thermal energy is directed to the treatment zones, diminishing the lumpy pockets of fat, releasing the areas of skin depression and increasing the elasticity and thickness of the skin. Patients require just one treatment.

“Although liposuction has some small effect on cellulite, its real utility is body contouring,” says Ronald K. Downs, M.D., F.A.C.S., Founder of The Centre, P.C.

“Cellulaze is the first treatment specifically designed to treat cellulite using laser technology.  Not only does it smooth out the superficial fat pockets under the skin, it breaks up the fibrous attachments that cause the dimples and improves skin tone by restoring collagen.”
