How To Get Rid Of Stretch Marks

It’s estimated that up to 80 percent of Americans have stretch marks, narrow bands of pink or purplish scars that appear when the skin expands or shrinks quickly.

Even though stretch marks are often associated with women and childbirth, men and people of all ages get them as well.

Most people don’t enjoy the look of stretch marks. So, how do you get rid of them? Does anything really work?

What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are like scars that develop in the middle layer of the skin called the dermis. The coloring you see is ruptured collagen and elastin, caused by the skin stretching or shrinking too quickly.

Stretch marks develop for several reasons including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Sudden weight loss or weight gain
  • Growth spurts during puberty
  • Rapid muscle growth
  • Certain medical conditions

When stretch marks first appear, they display in a variety of colors: red, pink, brown, dark brown. They may itch, and the ruptured collagen and elastin may feel slightly raised.

Mature stretch marks tend to be lighter and often display a silvery or glossy effect. Over time, the scar may feel slightly sunken.

Generally speaking, stretch marks are normal and pose no risk to general health. However, most people don’t enjoy the look of stretch marks and many prefer them gone or less visible.

What Gets Rid of Stretch Marks?

Because stretch marks are like scars, it’s almost impossible to get rid of them completely. However, improving their appearance is possible.

There are hundreds of ‘miracle’ creams, lotions, and gels promising to cure stretch marks. But very few products offer visible results, and many only treat stretch marks on certain skin types.

Prescription strength topical treatments are also available but offer similar results.

Professional procedures like laser treatments, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels can be very expensive, uncomfortable, and often require multiple in-office treatments to get results.

There’s no miracle fix when it comes to stretch marks.

What Really Works?

Strialite is the first stretch mark removal system cleared by the FDA for convenient home use. The handheld device is easy to use, pain-free, and most effective at reducing the bright red and purplish streaks associated with new stretch marks.

Strialite is a LED-based system that emits low-level light energy, effectively targeting stretch marks on a deep, cellular level to stimulate collagen production, minimizing the appearance of stretch marks.

Stretch marks treated with Strialite appear less visible in as little as four weeks. And instead of having expensive in-office treatments, patients use Strialite in the comfort of their own home.

To maximize results, patients are encouraged to treat each area for twenty minutes twice a week. Strialite is safe to use on the thighs, abdomen, hips, legs, back, and breasts—just about anywhere on the body!

Still not sure Strialite is right for you? Call The Centre P.C. to schedule an appointment. We’ll answer all your questions and more!

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is an excellent option for individuals discouraged by unwanted hair on their face, neck, underarms, legs, back, and sensitive areas like the bikini line.

Most people are familiar with the term laser hair removal; however, few understand how it actually works.

Today, we’re pulling back the curtain to reveal how the experienced technicians at the Centre Yourself Medical Rejuvenation Spa utilize state-of-the-art technologies to provide long-lasting, smooth results.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is performed by heating stem cells in the follicle, or the bulb of the hair, which is where hair growth occurs. When the follicle is disrupted, the hair falls out and results in smooth skin.

The selective absorption of photons within the laser only targets dark colors. This allows the laser to target dark hair while not damaging the skin or causing irritation. For example, dark hair (black or brown) is the easiest to remove, while white, light blonde and strawberry-blonde hair do not respond as well to laser hair treatments.

Hair grows in three cycles: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Laser hair removal is only effective during the anagen stage—the primary growth stage and when the hair is attached at the root. Because of this, multiple sessions are required to achieve the best results.

The type of laser and the technician’s skill and understanding of how to apply the correct amount of light and for the proper length of time can impact results and the patient’s experience.

Light skin and dark hair is the ideal combination for treatment; however, newer lasers have adapted to treat a variety of hair colors and textures with great success.

Laser hair removal is safe and effective for most patients. However, this treatment may not be suitable for individuals who:

  • Use a tanning bed or self-tanning lotions
  • Are prone to light-induced seizures
  • Take certain prescription medications
  • Experience adverse reactions to the wavelengths emitted by the laser

Why Choose Laser Hair Removal?

Women and men have used a variety of remedies to get rid of unwanted hair.

Electrolysis, for example, is also an effective treatment for hair removal. However, compared to laser treatments, electrolysis is slow, tedious, and often requires more sessions to achieve optimal results. Laser hair removal is up to 60 times faster than electrolysis.

Waxing and shaving are the most popular methods of hair removal. Unfortunately, the results don’t last very long, and the long-term cost of both can be significant.

Laser hair removal isn’t permanent, even after several treatments. However, only a few sessions per year are required to provide long-lasting results.

Enjoy the freedom of long-lasting, soft, touchable skin! Laser hair removal removes 100 percent of hair in a treated area. Our certified technicians recommend six treatments for initial results and only a couple session per year for annual maintenance.

Ditch the sharp razors and hot wax! Laser hair removal is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted hair from just about anywhere.

Lasers vs Injectables

Many of us have areas of our bodies we’d like to refine, but not everyone is willing to have plastic surgery.

For those people, there are a variety of options that are less invasive than surgery that can revive and rejuvenate your body.

At Centre Yourself™ Medical Rejuvenation Spa, our offering includes everything from body contouring to relaxation services like a therapeutic massage.

We also offer a variety of treatments designed to renew and invigorate your skin. Some are performed with a laser, while others make use of the wide range of injectables on the market and corrective skin care.

When looking at treatments to improve skin quality and appearance, one question many patients ask is, “what’s the difference between laser treatments and injectables?”

Although there are similarities between these two types of skin care treatments, there are some differences that you should consider before booking your procedure. In this article, we’ll talk about those differences, the pros and cons of each, and more.

Everything You Need to Know About Laser Treatments

Many people seek skin treatments to combat the wear and tear of aging. As the years go by, your skin loses some of the elasticity and vitality it once had. It can be seen in the wrinkles next to your eyes and the laugh lines around your lips.

Others undergo cosmetic laser treatments as a way to correct skin abnormalities that are hereditary or from sun exposure. These can include freckles, moles, and sunspots. Laser treatments provide a non-surgical option that is cost-efficient, quick, and easy.

 What Lasers Can Do

Laser treatments are ideal for individuals looking for skin rejuvenation this would help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

They can also remove unwanted body hair, treat the effects of aging on the blood vessels and spider veins, and eliminate spots of discoloration on the skin.

Pros and Cons of Laser Treatments

As with any medical procedure, there are advantages and disadvantages to using lasers as a treatment for skin imperfections and hair removal.

  • Lasers can be used to treat acne scars
  • They can even out varied skin tones for a smooth appearance
  • Lasers can achieve some tightening of your skin and help remove wrinkles
  • They can remove some of the cosmetic effects of sun damage and aging
  • They can be used to treat enlarged pores
  • Laser treatments are non-surgical and offer little to no downtime afterward
  • They can be an effective way to boost your body’s natural production of collagen
  • Paired with corrective medical grade skin care laser can provide a great treatment for skin rejuvenation.

  • Patients may experience pigment loss or hyperpigmentation
  • There is a slight risk for scarring
  • Laser treatments may cause patients mild discomfort during or after the procedure
  • Results may not be up to the patient’s expectations

 Potential Side Effects

Side effects are often mild and are not seen in every patient. Before you schedule your procedure, talk with your doctor about the potential for risks and complications.

  • Burns
  • Scarring
  • Reactivation of cold sores
  • Infection
  • Redness
  • Itching sensations
  • Milia (small, white bubbles on skin)

Recovery Times

Some redness and other side effects may last for several days, but patients are generally able to resume normal activities right away. Since this kind of treatment is non-invasive, some people choose to have it during their lunch break and return to work immediately afterward.

Recovery times vary depending on which procedure you choose, so talk to your surgeon to get more specific details about recovery times.

Everything You Need to Know About Injectable Treatments

Injectable treatments are designed to improve areas around the face, neck, and hands. It is an alternative to laser treatment that may be preferable depending on your goals and expectations.

When our bodies age, there is a natural reduction in the subcutaneous fat in our faces. This fat loss causes facial muscles to work their way closer to the surface, which creates unsightly lines and textures. Injectables are used to smooth wrinkles, lessen the appearance of crow’s feet, and reduce lip lines.

What Injectables Can Do

Similar to laser treatments, injectables are ideal for people who aren’t ready to commit to a surgical procedure. They’re also a good way for people who have surgical procedures, like facelifts, to maintain their results.

Injectables are not designed to improve skin tone or the texture of the skin. Their purpose is more geared to making the lines on the face fade over time. Most injectables use either a neurotoxin based product, like Botox, or a filler, such as hyaluronic acid. These materials slightly restrict certain muscles in the face from moving which, over time, allows wrinkles and lines to fade and prevent etched in lines.

Pros and Cons of Using Injectables

Injectables are a great way to avoid surgery and improve the appearance of the face and neck. Here are some pros and cons to consider before choosing your injectable procedure:

  • The procedure is quick and results can be seen almost instantaneously
  • Little to no downtime after the procedure
  • Dependent on the materials used, some procedures may be reversible
  • Low risk
  • Injectables can give you an idea of what results may look like if you choose a surgical option later
  • More cost efficient than some surgeries
  • Injectables offer the opportunity to start low and add additional filler as needed to achieve the desired results

  • Results are temporary, eventually requiring an additional procedure to maintain them
  • While initially cheaper than surgical options, the need to repeat injectable treatments means the cost will add up over time
  • Mild side effects, such as bruising, swelling may occur
  • Injectables, especially those in the lips, can be tricky and require an experienced surgeon, like those at Centre Yourself™, to achieve excellent results

Potential Side Effects

While there are no serious risks to receiving injectables, there are some you should consider before you go through your procedure:

  • Bleeding at the injection site
  • Swelling, bruising, redness, or tenderness
  • Asymmetry
  • Lumps or irregularities-Very rare
  • Scarring-Very Rare
  • Itching
  • Excessive stiffness
  • Allergic Reactions to fillers
  • Unintended injection of filler into a blood vessel

 Injectable Treatment Recovery Times

Patients may experience swelling, redness, bruising, or itching for up to 7 days after their injection. Those receiving lip injections may see symptoms for up to two weeks. In many cases, makeup can cover the visual symptoms. Most patients return to work and resume normal daily activities immediately after their procedure.

Combining Lasers and Injectables

Laser treatments and injectables may be combined to achieve the best results. It all depends on what your goals are and what look you’re trying to achieve.

The best way to figure out what combination of laser treatments and injectables are right for you is to speak with your surgeon. During your consultation, he or she can go over the different options and make suggestions based on their professional opinion.

Cellulite Treatment Options

In our industry, we hear over and over from women how much they hate cellulite.

Across the board, whether someone is in their 20s or their 70s, slim or overweight, cellulite doesn’t discriminate.

What’s worse, even though men aren’t immune to its dimpled appearance, because of the amount of fat natural to a woman’s body composition, we carry the brunt of it, with at least eight out of 10 women reporting some amount of cellulite.

If it’s so common, why do we spend so much time feeling self-conscious about it?

The fact is, anything that makes us think our bodies are less attractive, we are going to worry about it. While cellulite is not a serious medical condition, we do understand that it can be an emotional barrier for some women. Fortunately, there are a few things we can do to lessen its appearance.

Maintaining a healthy weight—along with regular exercise—is, of course, the single best course of treatment for cellulite.  Strong muscles and fewer fatty deposits beneath the skin’s surface will smooth its outer layer and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Topical skin creams containing 0.3% retinol have also been shown to reduce dimpling by increasing the skin’s elasticity and repairing damaged connective tissue that causes cellulite and the appearance of cellulite. Applied twice daily, patients generally see results over the course of several weeks.

Liposuction—the process of using a narrow tube to suction the fatty cells from beneath the skin—can be used to remove unwanted fat. The Centre, P.C. offers three liposuction methods: Ultrasonic Liposuction, Vaser© Liposelection, and SmartLipo™.

However, one of the more promising treatments of cellulite involves the use of lasers. Cellulaze™ is a treatment that attacks the structural problems beneath the skin that cause cellulite.

A minimally invasive, laser-assisted procedure performed by one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, Cellulaze is a new, FDA approved, anti-cellulite treatment that increases the skin’s natural thickness for a smoother, healthier look that lasts.

In the Cellulaze™ procedure, which is performed under a local anesthetic, the physician inserts a small tube under the skin. Laser thermal energy is directed to the treatment zones, diminishing the lumpy pockets of fat, releasing the areas of skin depression and increasing the elasticity and thickness of the skin. Patients require just one treatment.

“Although liposuction has some small effect on cellulite, its real utility is body contouring,” says Ronald K. Downs, M.D., F.A.C.S., Founder of The Centre, P.C.

“Cellulaze is the first treatment specifically designed to treat cellulite using laser technology.  Not only does it smooth out the superficial fat pockets under the skin, it breaks up the fibrous attachments that cause the dimples and improves skin tone by restoring collagen.”

So Long Saddlebags!

Today’s devices procedures tighten, smooth…and relieve

You almost hate to admit it; it sounds so superficial. After all, you work hard to keep your body in shape, why should a little cellulite keep you from feeling healthy?

So let’s call today’s blog “From the files of ‘I know I shouldn’t complain, but…’”

It’s natural to be frustrated by trouble spots. Women in particular struggle with it: the uncontrollable wrinkles or the way gravity pulls the skin under our triceps in spite of how many miles we’ve run, or tennis matches that we’ve played.

At The Centre, P.C., we work with our clients every day to help them see improvement in these areas—not because it makes them more beautiful, but because it shakes that unnecessary anxiety by its tail.

Our “Centre Yourself” Medical Rejuvenation Spa has several non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures that tighten skin, shrink fat cells and reduce cellulite and can work on the entire body. One device, the Venus Legacy, provides painless body contouring with visible, dramatic results with absolutely no downtime.

The gist of how it works without getting too technical (though if you want to get technical, click here), the Venus Legacy—and its sister device, the Venus Freeze—is a non-invasive radio-frequency device that uses pulsed magnetic fields to consistently and uniformly heat the skin from the inside out. Your body’s collagen heats up and tightens, reducing skin dimpling and wrinkles.

Our clients often compare it to a hot stone massage. It’s quick—one procedure a week, lasting anywhere between 15 minutes and an hour depending on the body part. Venus Legacy treatments succeed at tightening the skin in the face and neck. Body treatments show reduced cellulite and a more contoured figure.

“The Venus is a modality, not a one-time procedure. Body contouring gets deep to create a situation where the encapsulated fat can dissolve. So naturally, the best results are seen after 8, maybe 10 sessions,” says The Docs of “Centre Yourself” Medical Rejuvenation Spa. “If the treatments are coupled with nutrition, exercise, and an attitude of wellness our clients have amazing results.”

Your Venus Legacy specialist will take before-and-after photos in order to track your progress, it’s dramatic and it’s out there waiting for you. (To see a gallery of before-and-after images, click here.)

In future blogs, we’ll showcase other “Centre Yourself” Medical Rejuvenation Spa laser treatments and how they change our customers’ lives. In the meantime, to learn more about the best plastic surgery options for you call (574) 296-9100 or (574) 968-9100 to set up a consultation.

The Latest in Laser Treatments

If you’ve ever wondered if lasers could help you look and feel rejuvenated, there’s never been a better time to try it.

As technology advances, today’s laser treatments offer more variety with greater results. Our very own Dr. Patrick Viscardi recently outlined a few of The Centre, P.C.’s newest devices—and what they can do for you!

What it is: The Icon’s multi-device, IPL (intense-pulse light) platform offers a suite of popular treatments so you can address several target areas at each visit.

What it does best: The Icon is excellent for rosacea and pigmentation issues. It also is perfect for permanent hair reduction (its large face is particularly good at covering big areas like the back, legs, and chest), skin rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction, scar and stretch marks removal, and vessel and leg veins.

What makes it unique: Hands down, it’s the Icon’s Skintel Melanin Reader, the only one cleared by the FDA to determine the skin’s melanin density, which helps our aestheticians customize treatments to your specific needs. See before-and-after photos here.

What it is: Another IPL laser, the Elite combines two wavelengths in one system. This flexibility gives our patients exceptional results with minimal discomfort.

What it does best: Like the Icon, the Elite is a great choice for laser hair removal. Vascular lesions, birthmarks, small capillaries, and spider veins are also tackled easily in just a few treatments with this device. The Elite’s anti-aging facial therapies are completed with no redness or peeling.

What makes it unique: For men and women distressed by unwanted hair, the Elite can permanently reduce hair by an average of 79% after just three treatments. See before-and-after photos here.

What it is: One of the two, new minimally invasive lasers at The Centre, P.C., Smartlipo has redefined liposuction and has quickly become the market standard in laser lipolysis. This device allows our surgeons to treat patients more quickly; resulting in less bleeding, bruising and downtime—and with much greater comfort.

What it does best: For those who want high-definition body sculpting, Smartlipo is the best there is. For greater definition in the waist, arms, hips or chin, Smartlipo offers deep fat tissue treatment and tissue tightening for a broad spectrum of patients and treatment sites.

What makes it unique: Smartlipo’s three laser wavelengths are the star here. Less invasive than traditional liposuction, we can customize treatment like never before. See before-and-after photos here.

Precision Tx

What it is: Another market leader in laser body contouring, PrecisionTx offers a focused targeting of tissue.

What it does best: Its smaller-area modality is perfect for face and neck contouring. Precision Tx is also used with remarkable success for patients who are bothered by excessive underarm sweating. Areas treated by Precision Tx continue to improve over time.

What makes it unique: These one-time, one-hour procedures make PrecisionTx ideal for patients who are seeking the best possible results with the least amount of downtime. It’s considered to be the best non-surgical facelift available. See before-and-after photos here.

What it is: Smartskin+ is micro-ablative skin resurfacing device.

What it does best: Evening skin tone, smoothing the skin’s texture and dramatically reducing wrinkles. Smartskin+ targets the three layers of photodamaged tissue, epidermal pigment, mid-dermal wrinkles, and deep-dermal laxity.

What makes it unique: Smartskin+ has the ability to “read” your skin using the Fitzpatrick scale, this device allows complete customization of any skin resurfacing procedure. See before-and-after photos here.

What it is: This device works by targeting cellulite precisely at the source—in the underlying structural tissue, which allows the body to produce new collagen in the treated areas. While not new to our stable of laser devices, Cellulaze continues to provide excellent results for our patients.

What it does best: Cellulite reduction and body contouring. Many, regardless of exercise and diet, have trouble getting rid of cellulite. Through Cellulaze treatments, patients experience minimal downtime and with little soreness.

What makes it unique: Cellulaze treatments are one-time yet are considered to be the “gift that keeps giving”. While you will see improvement right away, full results continue to appear over the next three to six months. See before-and-after photos here.
